Returning to work after a career break

A career break is common and increasingly understood. How to explain it, refresh your skills and choose the right first role back.

Believers HR Editorial Team · 10 September 2026 · 5 min read

Career breaks for caregiving, health, study or relocation are common, and more employers now run structured returner programmes.

Explain the break simply

One honest line on your CV and in interviews is enough: why you took the break and what you are looking for now. You do not need to apologise for it.

Refresh before you apply

A short course, certification or volunteering role shows current knowledge and gives you recent examples to talk about.

Choose your first role carefully

Consider flexible or hybrid roles, contract positions or returner programmes that make the transition easier. A recruiter can help you identify employers with a good record of supporting returners.
