Salary and Compensation

Negotiating your salary when you change jobs

Preparation matters more than confidence. How to anchor your expectations, compare offers fairly and avoid common mistakes.

In India, salary conversations often start with your current CTC. That makes preparation essential, because the number you share early tends to anchor everything that follows.

Know your full current package

List fixed pay, variable pay, bonuses actually received, ESOPs, allowances and benefits such as insurance. Many candidates undervalue their current package by forgetting variable and long-term elements.

Research the role, not just your increment

Look at what the new role is worth in the market, not only what percentage increase you want. A bigger role can justify a larger move; a lateral move usually cannot.

Compare offers on the same basis

  • Separate fixed pay from variable and one-time payments.
  • Check how and when variable pay is paid out.
  • Value benefits, notice buyout and joining bonuses honestly.

Let your recruiter help

A recruiter can share realistic ranges, raise concerns on your behalf and help you avoid ultimatums that damage a relationship before it starts.

The goal is an offer you are glad to accept, from an employer who is glad to have made it.
