Hiring your first CFO: what founders should know

The first CFO hire is a turning point for a growing company. How to define the role, assess candidates and time the appointment.

Believers HR Editorial Team · 20 August 2026 · 7 min read

Most growing companies outgrow a finance controller before they realise it. The first CFO hire changes how the business plans, raises capital and reports to its board.

Define the stage you are hiring for

A CFO who can prepare a company for its next fundraising round is a different profile from one who can lead a listed company. Be clear about the next three years.

Look beyond technical finance

  • Can they explain the numbers to non-finance leaders?
  • Have they built and led a finance team?
  • How do they handle investors and auditors under pressure?

Assess with real problems

Ask candidates to review your current reporting or a recent board pack and tell you what they would change first.

Plan for notice periods

Senior finance leaders often have three-month notice periods. Start the search earlier than you think you need to.
